Our
vineyards are the pillars of our philosophy. We care for every
plant, every plot and every vineyard to make magnificent wines
from the very beginning of the process. Puente la Reina, the heart
of the Pilgrimís Way of Saint James and a privileged area
for the growing of vines, has always produced excellent wines.
The fruit of our love for wine.
Footsteps:
Bodega
de Sarria has been a pioneer in Navarre in the production and
bottling of quality wines. It is located in Puente la Reina, some
30 km from Pamplona, where the most important Ways of Saint James
coming from the Pyrenees at Somport and Roncevaux become one.
A beautiful 11th-century medieval bridge considered by many the
most attractive of the Way - gives its name to this town, whose
light and ambiance recall the Mediterranean. Charles III of Evreux
(14th-15th c), an exquisite and sensitive king, noticed the beauty
and gifts of this central location of his kingdom, which he frequented
to enjoy the flowing of water and the running of squirrels amidst
the hazels, and which he donated to his beloved wife Lenore. This
land, nurtured by the river Arga, has witnessed the growing of
vines for over twenty centuries. Those vines, like the vines at
Senorio de Sarria, are the labour of the love of wine and a prime
raw material.
Land:
Bodega de Sarria is located in the heart of Valdizarbe, a geographic
area standing between La Rioja and Bordeaux which provides the
best climatic and land conditions to produce exceptional quality
wines. Over 150 hectares of different varieties of vines stretch
out over slopes and sunny hillsides of the El Perdon mountain
range and in the municipal area of Miranda de Arga, by the riverbanks
of river Arga. Each plant, each vineyard, each plot are exquisitely
taken care of and supervised to elaborate magnificent wines from
the very beginning of the process. Tempranillo, Graciano, Cabernet-Sauvignon
and Merlot for red wines; Garnacha for rose wines; Chardonnay
for white wines - every variety of grape has been carefully selected
and is grown in the most favourable spot, taking into consideration
the light, humidity and temperature conditions that each of them
require. (to get to bodega de sarrÌa, you should first
get to the municipality of puente la reina. senorÌo de
sarrÌa is 8 km from the village, and the facilities stand
at the rear of the domain.)
Vision:
Bodega de Sarria was established with an innovative spirit
searching to supply the market with prime quality wines: crianza,
reserva, gran reserva, white and rose wines. It soon became the
leading name of quality wines from Navarra in both national and
foreign markets. Strong investments are currently being implemented
in the facilities and in human resources to innovate the wine-making
process and to adapt it to the requirements of increasingly demanding
clients. BODEGA DE SARRIA only bottles wines under the Navarra
label of origin and quality, as a seal and quality proof of the
product. Its main brand, Senorio de Sarria, commercializes two
wine ranges: the first one comprises traditional red, rose and
white wines; the second one, known as Vinedo, offers limited series
of bottles which provide the essence of the vineyards owned by
the winery: red wines (Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon)
with a little touch of cask, a high expression rose wine and a
cask-fermented white wine.
Wealth:
Many
centuries of history have witnessed the growing of vines in this
land: the remains of wine-making activities according to Pliniusí
treaties were found in this area of Valdizarbe. In the 16th century,
Juan de Azpilicueta, brother of Saint Francis Xavier, was the
lord of a palace in the Senorio de Sarria (or SarrÌa Manor)
which was surrounded by vineyards. But it was not until the 20th
century (1953), on the initiative of Felix Huarte, that the vineyards
were properly arranged. As a matter of fact, the age of the vineyards
guarantees the excellent quality of the wine:
Over
53 years of age: Garnacha and Graciano
Over 25 years of age: Cabernet and Tempranillo
Over 15 years of age: Chardonnay
Over 10 years of age: Merlot
All
of them are the undisputed winery jewels. The vineyards of BODEGA
DE SARRIA enjoy unique geographical conditions for the growing
of vines:
Area:
150 hectares
Altitude: 394 -539 m
Latitude: 420 N and 10 W
Orientation: Southwards
Rainfall rate: 400-600 l/m2 per year
